The chateaux of the Dordogne are a must see visit during your stay in the region, but with perhaps over 1000 to choose from which ones stand out and are not to be missed.

Here are just three of the best all located within a short drive of each other and the banks of the Dordogne. The once English stronghold of Castelnaud is south of the river almost opposite the French held Chateau of Beynac and not too far away is Marqueyssac with it’s magnificent gardens.

Castelnaud
The Chateau of Marqueyssac

The main stronghold of the English during the Hundred Years War, Castelnaud has working versions of the historic siege engines.

As well as a visit to the chateau in the summer there are demonstrations of medieval weapons.

The chateau is renowned for its gardens with six kilometers of walk ways lined with thousands of box plants.

Dating back to the 17th century the gardens are open each Thursday night in summer for a visit by candlelight.

One of the best preserved and most visted chateau in the Dordogne.

The chateau of Beynac boosts a magnificent collection of tapestries and beautifully painted ceilings.
